I don't have any tattoos, yet. I haven't settled on something that I really like, so I am going to wait.

Hey guys, I found this tattoo on a blog about bad modifications. So first, the quality of the tattoo... Ugh. It sucks now, and it would suck even if it was in the 1960's. There's no excuse. But the main reason why I post this is that because of the text. We're Canadians or friends of Canadians here, so with this comes the issue of language. English and French, both great languages. Being bilingual is fun, cause it lets us laugh at this. However, I can share the fun with you Anglophones... This person obviously wanted the tattoo to say "we fly together", which is nice and cute. But that would read "nous volons ensemble" if the verb had been conjugated properly. Not only that, but since the verb "voler" can both mean "to fly" and "to steal", this makes it worse. It now looks like an awkward incomplete sentence that reads like "(plural subject that isn't there) ...stealing us together". I'm giving little French lessons to Wendy but have been a little bit lazy at it (u can point at me and say "lazy stoner") so I compensate a little bit with this little post. Moral of the story, if you want a tattoo in a language you aren't fluent in (or even your own, misspelled ink happens a lot), find someone who can make sure it's correct before sitting in the tattoo chair. I mean, there's thousands of people who have a "clever and spiritual" Chinese tattoo that actually means something like "bottle (gibberish) maple wood (name of a small village in Szechuan) above".

Ahaha, well said Marie. There are a lot of people who don't proof check their tatoo, and that's sad.

Heheheheh, sweet. I've never been comfortable that voler means both "to steal" and "to fly". It's weird to me! Also that "as-tu le temps...?" (do you have the time to...?) sounds exactly like "as-tu le thon?" (Do you have the tuna?)
Should it say something like "nous prenons un vol ensemble" instead? Or is there another verb besides "voler" that means "to fly"? (or "to steal"?)

Yeah, I can't really find something that would make it a nice, poetic tattoo. "Nous prenons un vol ensemble" is a correct sentence, but it makes it sound more like you are talking about an airplane, in the sense of "we are boarding a flight together".
Maybe I would pick something like "nous nous envolons ensemble", "we are taking flight together". It's not ambiguous and it doesn't sound too awkward.
Come to think of it, there aren't too many classic French word tattoos... English sayings have pretty much always been in modern tattooing, and there's tons of classic flash with sayings like "death before dishonor", which might be why lots of French people get English tattoos.
The only classic French word tattoos I can think about are "pas de chance", "c'est la vie" and "je ne regrette rien"

I've got the Gonzo first on the back of my neck. I'm planning to get a Zelda one on my back too. Not that I'm trying to get this topic off track
